Background of the Study
Communal clashes, often marked by violence and mass casualties, require swift forensic investigation to establish accountability and provide justice. In Obubra Local Government Area, Cross River State, forensic anthropology has been increasingly utilized to resolve cases arising from communal conflicts (Ibeh, 2023). Techniques such as skeletal analysis, trauma evaluation, and DNA profiling are employed to identify victims and determine the circumstances of their deaths (Okorie, 2024). Despite these advancements, challenges remain due to the chaotic nature of communal clashes, which often result in fragmented and commingled remains. Furthermore, logistical issues and resource constraints can compromise the accuracy and timeliness of forensic investigations (Ekwueme, 2025). This study evaluates the application of forensic anthropological methods in the resolution of communal clashes, aiming to identify operational weaknesses and propose improvements that can streamline evidence recovery and support judicial processes in conflict-affected areas.

Statement of the Problem
In Obubra, the forensic investigation of communal clashes is hindered by disorganized recovery efforts, fragmented remains, and limited forensic resources (Ekwueme, 2025). The chaotic environment of communal conflicts exacerbates the challenges of accurate victim identification and trauma analysis. These issues compromise the reliability of forensic evidence, impacting legal proceedings and the quest for justice. This study aims to assess the deficiencies in current forensic methodologies and recommend strategies to enhance the effectiveness and timeliness of forensic investigations in communal clash scenarios (Ibeh, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To assess the effectiveness of forensic anthropological methods in communal clash investigations.

  • To identify operational and methodological challenges in forensic evidence recovery.

  • To recommend improvements for enhancing forensic investigations in conflict zones.

Research Questions:

  • How effective are current forensic anthropological techniques in resolving communal clashes?

  • What challenges affect the recovery and interpretation of forensic evidence in such events?

  • What strategies can improve the forensic investigation process in conflict settings?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Advanced forensic imaging significantly improves evidence recovery in communal clashes.

  • H2: Operational challenges negatively impact forensic investigation outcomes.

  • H3: Standardized forensic protocols enhance the reliability of evidence in conflict scenarios.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it informs forensic practice by evaluating methodologies used in resolving communal clashes. Its findings will guide forensic experts and law enforcement in refining protocols, thereby improving evidence recovery, judicial processes, and community trust. The study contributes to enhanced forensic operations in conflict-affected regions (Okorie, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to evaluating forensic anthropological methods in resolving communal clashes in Obubra Local Government Area, Cross River State. It does not extend to other conflict-related forensic investigations.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Communal Clashes: Violent conflicts between different community groups.

  • Forensic Evidence: Scientific data collected to assist in legal investigations.

  • Forensic Anthropology: The discipline that applies anthropological methods to legal cases.
